I loved the concept about two people who fall out of love falling in love again, but it just fell flat to me. I can see why people would compare the two even though the plots aren’t similar. While Naomi jumps to the conclusion that her fiancé is trying to kill her with flowers, Lucy jumps to the conclusion that Josh is a vampire. Both of their narrators have outlandishly hilarious thoughts and blow shit out of proportion. This book has been compared to THE HATING GAME and the writing style of Sarah and Sally are pretty similar. (This review contains minor spoilers for You Deserve Each Other)Įhhhhhhh yeah I’m in the minority of the people who didn’t enjoy this book. This is a lovers-to-enemies-to-friends-to-lovers rom-com. But somehow in the process Naomi realizes she is having fun with the person she least expects to: her fiancé. So the two start to try to drive the other one to leave. The only problem? Who ever calls off the big day must heft over the big bill. Naomi and Nicholas want to break off their engagement. In the early thirties, the Duke and Duchess of York were looking for someone to educate their daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret, then five- and two-years-old. The family moved to Buckingham Palace, and ten-year-old Princess Elizabeth became the heir to the crown she would ultimately wear for over fifty years. The Little Princesses shows us how it all began. Suddenly the little princesses’ father was King. Their father was the Duke of York, the second son of King George V, and their Uncle David was the future King of England. We all know how the fairy tale ended: When King George died, “Uncle David” became King Edward VIII-who abdicated less than a year later to marry the scandalous Wallis Simpson. Once upon a time, in 1930s England, there were two little princesses named Elizabeth and Margaret Rose. In my teen years, I did not enjoy the amazing wealth of YA fiction that older kids get to dip into now, and most of the books we were offered at that age were horribly anachronistic. My first love was the Asterix books by Goscinny and Uderzo, which informed the mischievous humour and anarchic tone of my writing later in life (as well as forever skewing my perspective upon ancient history). Who were your literary influences as you were growing up? His latest book is Places in the Darkness. His debut novel was Quite Ugly One Morning and subsequent works have included One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night, and All Fun and Games until Somebody Loses an Eye. He has been referred to as a Tartan Noir author. Chris Brookmyre is a Scottish novelist whose books mix comedy, politics, social comment and action with a strong narrative. At times overshadowed by larger military events, the action Pittenger was involved in was one of the most daring and compelling stories of behind-the-lines action in the war. While the story strays far from the original, Keaton and his collaborators based the film The General on a memoir written by William Pittenger entitled The Great Locomotive Chase. His adventures eventually lead to his commission as an officer and success in winning his girl. Featuring the story of a railroad engineer denied enlistment in the Confederate Army while trying to woo his sweetheart, Annabelle, Keaton’s character is forced into action when his engine, the General, is stolen by Union spies with Annebelle on board. Not well received at the time, this film is now considered a classic, ranked in 2007 by the American Film Institute as #18 on their list of 100 best movies of all time. In 1926, a silent comedy was released staring Buster Keaton as “Johnny Gray” in an action-packed romance set during the Civil War. But by my count? Sorrowland could be accurately placed in six: LGBTQ+ coming-of-age, survival thriller, supernatural horror, speculative fantasy, psychological literary fiction, and science-fiction.Īmazingly, Sorrowland not only successfully pulls off that balancing act, but excels at it.īefore I go further, though, I should probably clarify my opinion: I didn’t love Sorrowland. In reality (not the one where I’m in True Detective) very few of them truly accomplish the feat. There are plenty of books, films, and TV series that try to be “genre-agnostic”-pieces of art that claim to exist simultaneously in several different genres. *Peter slaps himself across the face and reminds himself that he isn’t Rust Cohle.* Said writer slams down an overpriced beer and wordlessly walks out.ĭid this happen to me? In reality? No. A befuddled writer walks into a Brooklyn watering hole and is asked to pitch the premise of Sorrowland in a succinct, logline-like manner. Just knowing what it meant to them to just be out there meant the world to me. Read honest and unbiased product reviews from our users. I would use them every opportunity that I could. I knew what female wrestlers had to deal with courtesy of the “men’s club” in the 90’s, but what Mae and Moolah had to endure decades earlier-I don’t even WANT TO KNOW. Mae and Moolah were truly, truly, trail blazers in the wrestling business. Every time these two ladies would grace my presence at a TV taping, it was an absolute GIFT. When I worked with both Mae Young and the Fabulous Moolah, they were both in their mid-70’s. Now, I did have the honor of working with Mae and it was every bit of the word-HONOR. Yeah, the SAME GUY who thought Mae Young giving birth to a HAND would be an ABSOLUTE HOOT!!įACT-I had been gone from the WWE for FIVE MONTHS prior to Mae giving life to 5 fingers and a palm-FIVE MONTHS!
